BRIEF HISTORICAL SUMMARY: In April 1831, one of the inhabitants of the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides archipelago found a small cave covered with sand on the coast of the island. In it, he dug up a treasure, consisting of several dozen chess pieces from a walrus tusk and a whale’s tooth. It is not clear how many there were originally, but until recently 93 pieces were known: kings, queens, bishops (that is, chess bishops), knights (horses), guards (rooks) and pawns. The hoard also included checkers for playing backgammon and a belt buckle. It is assumed that chess was made in the Norwegian city of Trondheim in the second half of the 12th century. The game of chess was well known to the Scandinavians of that time, and the city of Trondheim was famous for its walrus tusk carvers. The Outer Hebrides were then part of the Kingdom of Norway, and the Isle of Lewis served as an intermediate point on the trade route linking Trondheim and Dublin. In a poem of the 13th century, the ruler of the island, Angus Mor Isley, is mentioned, who inherited, among other things, a set of chess pieces. It is believed that for unknown reasons the chess was buried on the Isle of Lewis by a trader who was taking it to Ireland for sale. Now eleven figures are in the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh, and the rest belong to the British Museum in London.
